Adium is an open‑source instant messaging client for macOS that connects to a variety of services such as XMPP (Jabber), IRC, AIM, MSN, Yahoo and many others via the libpurple protocol library. It provides a tabbed chat interface with a themeable WebKit message view, integrates contacts with the macOS Contacts app, and supports visual notifications through Growl and macOS Notification Center. Features include OTR encryption, file transfer, and a system of “Xtras” for further customization, while the client is localized into 27 languages.
The application is built with the Cocoa API, released under the GNU GPL, and is maintained by volunteers who accept contributions of code, translations, artwork, and documentation. Users can access extensive help resources, including documentation, troubleshooting guides, and an IRC channel for support. Adium runs on macOS 10.7.5 or newer, with older versions supporting earlier releases of the operating system.
