BAREMAIL ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ
Minimalist Gmail client for bad wifi connections
A lightweight web client for Gmail, BAREMAIL is built to function when bandwidth is extremely limited. The interface loads under 60 KB when gzipped and relies on a service worker to cache assets, so subsequent visits consume no additional data. It fetches email content in a few kilobytes, allowing users on airplane Wi‑Fi, rural networks, or other spotty connections to read and compose messages without the heavy load of Gmail’s standard web UI.
The application runs entirely in a modern browser and can be installed as a progressive web app, eliminating the need for downloads or app‑store distribution. Emails are sent directly between the browser and Google’s Gmail API; no separate backend server handles user data, preserving privacy by keeping communications out of third‑party services. Users interact via keyboard shortcuts (j/k for navigation, o to open, c to compose, r to reply, e to archive), providing a Vim‑style workflow that suits power users.
BAREMAIL is open source under the MIT license, with a codebase intentionally kept small and dependency‑light. Developers may self‑host, fork, or contribute, and the project enforces a size limit on the app shell to maintain its minimal footprint.
