BetterCapture
Free and open source screen recorder with professional encoding support.
A native macOS screen recorder built with SwiftUI and ScreenCaptureKit, offering a lightweight alternative to QuickTime. It lets users capture the display together with system audio and microphone input, and stores the resulting files locally without any cloud integration or tracking. The interface lives in the menu bar and uses the macOS Content Picker for intuitive region or window selection, following Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.
The application supports multiple professional codecs, including ProRes 4444, HEVC, and H.264, and can retain an alpha channel for transparent video. Users can record system audio, microphone audio, and filter out specific windows, providing flexibility for both simple tutorials and high‑quality production work.
Distributed under the MIT license, the software is completely free and open source, with no subscriptions, trials, or hidden fees. It can be installed via Homebrew or downloaded from GitHub, and requires macOS 15.2 Sequoia or later. Community contributions are welcomed on the project’s repository.
