Bluefish
Open source code editor
Bluefish is a lightweight, open‑source editor aimed at programmers and web developers. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD and OpenBSD and supports a wide range of programming and markup languages, providing syntax highlighting, tag editing, and template handling. The editor includes a side‑by‑side view for editing two documents simultaneously and automatically adapts its colour scheme to dark desktop themes.
The software is released under the GNU GPL licence and is maintained as a stable project. Recent releases have refined the split‑view feature, improved reliability of line selection and paste operations, and added better detection of Python comments. Configuration files are now stored in platform‑specific locations such as ~/.config on Linux and ~/Library/Application Support on macOS.
Bluefish offers a UI selection dialog that lets users choose a layout optimized for web development, general programming, or a fully enabled interface, simplifying initial setup for new users. Translations have been updated for several languages, and the Windows build provides clearer error messages for external command failures.
