Coder
Remote development machines on your own infrastructure.
The platform lets organizations provision cloud‑based development environments on their own public or private infrastructure. Workspaces are defined with Terraform, allowing any combination of VMs, Kubernetes pods, Docker containers, or other resources, and they connect to developers through a secure Wireguard tunnel. Idle environments are automatically shut down to reduce cost, and developers can be onboarded in seconds.
It is aimed at engineering teams that need self‑hosted, governed environments for both human developers and AI coding agents. The system supports a wide range of IDEs and can run on Linux, macOS, Windows, or air‑gapped on‑premises setups. All components are open source under the AGPL‑3.0 license, require no subscription, and can be deployed with a single command after installing the server and a PostgreSQL instance.
Distinctive aspects include the use of Terraform for reproducible environment definitions, built‑in security defaults such as Wireguard networking and audit logging, and the ability to manage compute resources centrally while giving developers and approved agents isolated, controllable workspaces.
