DietPi

Minimal Debian OS optimized for single-board computers, which allows you to easily install and manage several services for selfhosting at home.

A highly streamlined Debian‑based operating system designed for single‑board computers, DietPi minimizes CPU and RAM consumption while providing a full Linux environment. It ships with lightweight configuration tools that use simple Whiptail menus, allowing users to set hardware options, network parameters, and localisation without extensive command‑line work. The system includes a RAM‑based logging option for performance‑critical setups and an automated update mechanism that notifies of new releases and applies them without rebuilding the image.

DietPi offers a curated catalogue of “ready‑to‑run” applications covering desktop environments, media players, BitTorrent clients, cloud services, home automation, web server stacks, DNS tools, and many other categories. Installation and configuration are handled by the dietpi‑software and dietpi‑services utilities, which automatically adjust service priorities, affinity, and scheduling to keep the device responsive. Users can also automate full installations by predefining settings in a dietpi.txt file.

The project is open source under GPL‑2.0, maintained by a community of contributors, and targets hobbyists, developers, and anyone seeking a low‑overhead platform for self‑hosting or experimental projects on hardware such as Raspberry Pi, Odroid, Pine64, and similar SBCs.
