Fedora Commons Repository

Robust and modular repository system for the management and dissemination of digital content especially suited for digital libraries and archives, both for access and preservation.

Fedora Commons Repository is an open‑source, self‑hostable system for storing, managing, and delivering digital objects. It provides a modular architecture that supports preservation‑oriented storage, flexible scalability, and a RESTful HTTP API for programmatic access. The platform can be deployed in standard servlet containers such as Jetty or Tomcat and runs on Java 21 with Maven for building and testing.

The software is aimed at institutions that need robust digital library or archival capabilities, including universities, national libraries, cultural‑heritage organizations, research institutes, and government agencies. It is used for both public access and long‑term preservation of large, complex collections ranging from historic cultural materials to scientific datasets.

Distinctive aspects include a focus on preservation transparency, configurable storage options, and extensive community support through mailing lists, Slack channels, and regular technical calls. Fedora is released under the Apache‑2.0 license and is maintained by the Lyrasis stewardship community.
