Flying Carpet

File transfer over ad-hoc wifi

Source

Flying Carpet enables direct file transfer between Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows devices using an ad‑hoc Wi‑Fi connection. The two devices only need Wi‑Fi (and optionally Bluetooth) hardware and be in close proximity; no external network, cellular service, or shared hotspot is required. The application can handle large files, including those over 2 GB, and works across different filesystems without setting up network shares.

The software is distributed as native installers and standalone executables for each platform, with macOS available via Homebrew. It is built with Rust and the Tauri framework, and the source includes instructions for compiling from code. Version 9 adds Bluetooth for transfer negotiation, though Apple devices cannot act as hotspots and therefore can only exchange files with non‑Apple systems.

Typical users are individuals who need to move files quickly between devices that lack a common network, such as when a flash drive is unavailable or a wireless network cannot be accessed. The tool is stable, supports multiple operating systems, and is intended for personal productivity scenarios.
