FreedomBox

Community project to develop, design and promote personal servers running free software for private, personal, communications.

FreedomBox is a personal server platform built on a free‑software operating system and a collection of open‑source applications. It is designed for non‑experts, allowing users to install and configure services such as file sharing, messaging, VPN, proxy, blogging, and network‑attached storage with a few clicks on inexpensive hardware that they control. The system runs on a home internet connection and power supply, keeping data and communications under the owner’s direct jurisdiction.

The software suite emphasizes privacy and security, offering decentralized alternatives to commercial services like Dropbox and WhatsApp, as well as tools for synchronizing calendars, contacts, and media across devices. Because it is part of Debian and released under the AGPL‑3.0 license, the code is openly available and can be audited or modified by the community.

FreedomBox is maintained by a nonprofit foundation and supported by a global free‑software community. It provides a self‑hosted, subscription‑free solution for individuals who want to keep their digital life private and under personal control.
