Galene

Video conferencing server that is easy to deploy and that requires moderate server resources.

Galene is a self‑hosted WebRTC video‑conferencing server written in Go that runs on a wide range of platforms, including Linux, macOS, Windows and various ARM devices. It provides a web‑based client that works in modern browsers on desktop and mobile, allowing users to join groups, authenticate with passwords, and exchange audio and video streams. The server handles encryption between client and server, but does not implement end‑to‑end encryption, so control of the server grants access to the media data.

The software targets institutions and groups that need a lightweight, easy‑to‑deploy solution for lectures, tutorials, meetings and conferences. It has been deployed at large universities and for public events, demonstrating its ability to support multiple participants with modest hardware requirements. Configuration is managed through JSON files and an administrative API, and the system can be installed manually or via package managers such as Yunohost.

Galene is released under the MIT license, is free of subscription or tiered pricing, and welcomes contributions through its mailing list and GitHub repository. Its design emphasizes simplicity, portability and low resource consumption while providing the core features expected of a modern video‑conferencing platform.
