LoneWriter provides a suite of writing tools focused on novel development while keeping all data on the user’s machine. It lets authors structure their manuscript into acts, chapters, and scenes, reorder sections with drag‑and‑drop, and set custom word‑count goals that are visualized as progress streaks. A built‑in knowledge base stores world‑building lore, character notes, and other context files, which can be toggled for the “Oracle” to reference while drafting.

The application includes a local Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) engine that indexes the manuscript and associated lore using a MiniLM‑based vector database. When the writer invokes the AI, the system retrieves the most relevant fragments and injects them into prompts, all without sending any content to external services. Integration with Ollama or LM Studio enables running large language models locally, ensuring absolute privacy and eliminating subscription requirements.

Additional features cover dynamic UI design with dark mode, optional cloud sync via Google Drive, automatic backups, and one‑click export to DOCX. The software also extracts and categorizes narrative elements such as characters, locations, and objects, providing saliency scoring to keep AI prompts concise.
