MySQL Workbench is a visual tool that supports database architects, developers, and administrators in designing, modeling, and managing MySQL schemas. It offers ER diagram creation, forward and reverse engineering, and change‑management features that help users build and document complex data models without manual scripting.

The application includes a SQL editor with syntax highlighting, auto‑completion, and execution history, as well as a connection manager and object browser for quick access to schema objects. Administration functions cover server configuration, user account handling, backup and recovery, audit inspection, and health monitoring through a visual console.

Performance tools provide dashboards that display key indicators, reports that locate I/O hotspots and expensive queries, and a visual Explain Plan for query optimization. A migration assistant enables conversion of tables and objects from other relational systems such as Microsoft SQL Server, Access, Sybase ASE, and PostgreSQL into MySQL.
