Video DownloadHelper Companion App
Allows video downloads from the Web
The companion application works alongside the Video DownloadHelper browser extension to perform operations that the extension cannot execute inside the browser. When a user initiates a download, the extension communicates with this external program, which handles tasks such as media extraction and file saving. The application is open‑source, and its code is publicly available for review.
It is distributed for Windows, macOS (10.15 and later, supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux. Installers are provided for each platform, and Linux users can also install via a simple shell command or manual binary extraction. Some Linux builds rely on the system’s ffmpeg, while others include a bundled version.
The companion app is required for the extension to function correctly; users must ensure it is running and up to date, and they should close the browser before upgrading it. Troubleshooting guidance is available if the extension fails to detect the companion.
