Onyx provides a self‑hosted chat interface that can connect to any large language model, whether self‑hosted or offered by a provider. The platform adds advanced capabilities such as agent‑driven retrieval‑augmented generation, web search, code execution, document and image generation, and a multi‑step “deep research” workflow. It also includes connectors to more than forty knowledge sources and an MCP system for interacting with external applications.

The software is aimed at teams and developers who need a customizable AI assistant that can query internal data, browse the web, and perform actions on behalf of the user.
