OpenRefine
Tool for working with messy data (previously Google Refine)
OpenRefine is an open‑source application for cleaning, transforming, and extending messy data sets. It lets users import data in various formats, apply operations such as facet‑based filtering, clustering of similar values, and reconciliation with external databases, and then export the results in a different format. The tool tracks every change, providing unlimited undo/redo and the ability to replay a history on a new version of the data.
Typical users include data analysts, researchers, and anyone who needs to preprocess large or inconsistent data before analysis. Its faceting and clustering features help explore and correct inconsistencies, while reconciliation services enable linking records to external knowledge bases such as Wikidata. All processing occurs locally, preserving privacy by keeping data on the user’s machine.
OpenRefine runs on macOS and is maintained as a stable, community‑driven project. It supports integration with web services and Wikibase instances, allowing contributions to shared knowledge bases directly from the interface.
