Samba
Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix. It provides secure, stable and fast file and print services for all clients using the SMB/CIFS protocol.
Samba implements the SMB and Active Directory protocols for Linux and Unix‑like systems, allowing those machines to share files and printers with Windows clients and other SMB‑compatible devices. It supports the full range of SMB/CIFS features, including authentication through LDAP and Kerberos, and can operate either as an Active Directory Domain Controller or as a member server within an existing AD forest.
The software is designed for environments that need reliable, high‑performance access to networked storage, such as cloud PaaS platforms, software‑defined storage solutions, high‑performance computing clusters, and enterprise NAS appliances. Its architecture scales across distributed filesystems and integrates security capabilities required by modern networks.
Samba is released under GPL‑3.0, maintained by a global community, and offered without subscription or tiered pricing. It is considered a stable, self‑hostable component for any organization seeking seamless interoperability between Linux/Unix and Windows infrastructures.
