StartOS
Browser-based, graphical Operating System (OS) that makes running a personal server as easy as running a personal computer.
StartOS is an open‑source Linux distribution that provides a browser‑based graphical interface for managing a personal server. It automates discovery, installation, network setup, data backup, dependency handling, and health monitoring of self‑hosted services, using a Rust backend, Angular frontend, and an LXC container runtime. Services are packaged as signed, merkle‑archived S9PKs and synchronized through a custom diff‑based database.
The system is aimed at users who want to run cloud‑like applications on their own hardware without relying on third‑party providers. It offers a marketplace of ready‑to‑install services such as Bitcoin and Lightning nodes, Matrix messaging, Nextcloud storage, and Vaultwarden, and it allows anyone to create and publish additional packages.
StartOS can be installed on a purchased Start9 server, on existing compatible hardware, or built from source, and it is released under the MIT license with a stable maturity level. It is self‑hostable, free‑tier, subscription‑free, and fully libre.
