Surge XT is an open‑source hybrid synthesizer that combines multiple synthesis methods, including subtractive, wavetable, FM, and physical‑modeling techniques. Each patch can contain two independent scenes, allowing layered or split‑signal designs, and the engine offers three oscillators per scene with twelve algorithms such as classic pulse/saw, modern mixable waveforms, FM2/3, string, and noise sources. A large library of factory sounds—over 2 800 patches and 700 wavetables—provides a broad palette for sound designers.

The instrument includes a flexible modulation system, a wide selection of filters, and an extensive effects rack. Modern features support MPE, microtuning via Scala and MTS‑ESP, and full Open Sound Control integration, enabling precise expressive control and external scripting. Users can browse patches with a text‑searchable browser, mark favorites, and import or export settings through standard formats.
