Synthesia
Learn how to play the piano using falling notes
Synthesia presents piano practice as a visual “falling notes” experience, allowing users to follow along with a scrolling representation of the music while playing on a real or virtual keyboard. The program can display full sheet‑music notation or hide it entirely, letting learners focus on timing and hand placement. It supports separate hand practice, finger‑number hints, and optional light‑up keyboard integration to highlight upcoming notes.
The software works with any MIDI file, a built‑in collection of 150 songs, and files from the Music Store, and it now also imports MusicXML files. Users receive immediate feedback on accuracy and can track long‑term progress, while a “next note” marker and customizable label options aid navigation. Recent updates add key‑signature chord information, multi‑instrument input, and extensive performance optimizations.
Targeted at beginners and intermediate players on macOS, Synthesia aims to make piano learning engaging and self‑paced, offering a free version with optional paid upgrades for additional features.
