TIC-80
Fantasy computer for making, playing and sharing tiny games
TIC‑80 is a free, open‑source fantasy computer that bundles a code editor, sprite, map and sound tools, and a command‑line interface for creating small retro‑style games. The environment enforces classic constraints such as a 240 × 136 pixel display, a 16‑color palette, 256 8 × 8 sprites and four‑channel audio, allowing developers to produce games that feel like they belong to early home consoles. When development finishes, the project is exported as a cartridge file that can be played on the web or packaged into a standalone player for any major operating system.
The platform is aimed at hobbyists, indie developers and educators who want a lightweight, self‑contained toolkit for learning game programming or quickly prototyping pixel‑art titles. Its built‑in editors eliminate the need for external assets, and the simple cartridge format makes sharing and remixing games straightforward. A community of contributors supplies a variety of example carts, ranging from platformers and shooters to puzzle and 3‑D demos, illustrating the range of possibilities within the imposed technical limits.
