Tiled
Flexible level editor
Tiled is a free, open‑source level editor that lets developers create and edit tile‑based maps for games. It supports orthogonal, isometric, and hexagonal layouts, as well as infinite maps that expand automatically, and provides object layers where rectangles, ellipses, and polygons can be placed, resized, and rotated. Users can paint terrain quickly, apply rule‑based placement, and organize multiple maps within a world file.
The editor offers a customizable workflow with keyboard shortcuts, project navigation, and extensibility through JavaScript, allowing custom file formats, actions, and tools to be added. It can export maps to a variety of formats such as Image, JSON, Lua, GameMaker, Defold, and tBIN, making it compatible with many game development frameworks.
Tiled is used by indie and commercial developers alike, having contributed to titles like Shovel Knight, Axiom Verge, and Carrion. It runs on macOS, is maintained as a stable release, and is supported by a community of sponsors and contributors.
