WriteFreely
Writing software for starting a minimalist, federated blog — or an entire community.
WriteFreely provides a clean, distraction‑free writing environment with an auto‑saving editor that focuses on publishing articles and static pages. Content is organized through hashtags, pinning, drafts, and the ability to publish to multiple blogs from a single account, and the interface supports over twenty languages, including non‑Latin and right‑to‑left scripts.
The platform is built for federated communities: it uses ActivityPub to let other instances and services such as Mastodon or Pleroma follow, bookmark, and share posts, and it offers OAuth 2.0 for onboarding members from existing platforms. Writers can host multiple blogs under one account while keeping associations private unless they choose to reveal them.
WriteFreely is a self‑hostable, open‑source application distributed as a static Go binary, with optional SQLite or MySQL storage and Docker support. Installation requires only the binary and a few configuration files, making it lightweight enough to run on modest hardware such as a Raspberry Pi. The software is released under AGPL‑3.0, is maintained as a stable project, and encourages community contributions.
