Aleph One
Open-source continuation of Bungie's Marathon 2 game engine
Aleph One implements the original Marathon 2 engine as a community‑maintained, open‑source project. It runs the three Marathon titles—Marathon, Marathon 2, and Marathon Infinity—on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and it can load many third‑party scenarios and network maps. The code is released under the GPL, allowing anyone to compile or modify the engine.
The engine supports both single‑player campaigns and peer‑to‑peer multiplayer for up to eight participants, with a global matchmaking lobby and optional lhowon.org accounts for tracking statistics and leaderboards. Multiplayer can be played over LAN or the Internet when the host is configured appropriately.
Beyond the original trilogy, Aleph One serves as a platform for community‑created content, including new levels, total conversions, and custom weapons and monsters. It provides a stable base for developers and hobbyists who want to extend or experiment with the Marathon universe.
