OpenMW
Open-source open-world RPG game engine that supports playing Morrowind
OpenMW is a reimplementation of the engine used for the open‑world role‑playing game Morrowind, released under an open‑source license. It loads the original game data and runs it on modern systems, providing a compatible experience while allowing community contributions and extensions. The project includes a Lua scripting API, with the recent Load context enabling scripts to modify game data immediately after loading, such as adding custom spell effects that do not depend on built‑in mechanics.
The engine supports macOS and other platforms, offering features like BC7 texture compression for DDS files, terrain vertex painting in the editor, and updated shader handling. It maintains compatibility with existing save files from earlier stable releases, though saves created with newer versions cannot be loaded by older ones. Users are encouraged to test release candidates and report crashes, freezes, or regressions through the issue tracker.
OpenMW targets players who wish to experience Morrowind with modern improvements, as well as modders and developers who need a stable, extensible base for creating or adapting content. Its stable maturity level and active community support make it a practical choice for both gameplay and development purposes.
