Ammonite

Ammonite visualizes the tags present on a macOS system or within supported applications such as Finder, DEVONthink, and Obsidian. It displays tags in a cloud where larger fonts indicate more frequent usage, allowing users to quickly identify and explore heavily tagged items. The tool also respects tag hierarchies, letting users group tags with a “>” separator to create nested categories that appear as dedicated clouds, facilitating organization across different contexts.

The interface supports interactive searching: left‑clicking a tag includes matching documents, right‑clicking excludes them, and multiple tags can be combined with results updating instantly. Users can further narrow results by creation or modification dates, specifying single dates or ranges. Selected items show details and a Quick Look preview, and documents can be opened, revealed in Finder or DEVONthink, or added to a new DEVONthink folder.

Ammonite works with both Apple’s native tag format introduced in macOS Mavericks and the OpenMeta standard, ensuring compatibility with older tagging schemes. It runs on macOS Monterey (12.4) through Tahoe (26) on 64‑bit Intel or Apple Silicon hardware, and requires a licensed DEVONthink 3.8+ for database integration.
