Bfxr
Make sound effects for computer games
Bfxr is an open‑source utility for creating short, procedural sound effects that can be used in video games. It provides a graphical interface where users can generate and edit audio snippets by adjusting a set of parameters, such as frequency, decay, and pitch, or by applying randomization and mutation functions to produce varied results. The tool supports loading and saving its native project files, as well as exporting the final sounds in WAV format for integration into game assets.
The application is targeted at game developers and sound designers who need quick, customizable effects without recording or sampling external audio. Its workflow is keyboard‑driven, offering shortcuts for playing, saving, copying, and mutating sounds, which streamlines iterative experimentation. Bfxr also includes a catalogue generator that can produce batches of sounds automatically.
Built on the concepts of the earlier sfxr program and incorporating a footstep generator port, Bfxr runs on macOS and is released under an open‑source license, allowing users to inspect and modify the source code as needed.
