BibDesk

Edit and manage bibliographies

Visit

BibDesk provides a macOS‑native environment for creating, organizing, and maintaining bibliographic collections. Users can store standard citation fields together with associated PDFs, web links, or other files, and the application can automatically rename and relocate those resources as needed. A built‑in search filters entries instantly, while full‑text indexing of linked PDFs and configurable smart groups enable dynamic, keyword‑driven views of the library.

The program supports importing from a variety of sources, including plain text, BibTeX, RIS, and direct queries to online databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and arXiv. It can also retrieve bibliographic data from arbitrary web pages or library catalogs via protocols like Z39.50 and Entrez, allowing users to populate their library with a single click.

Export functionality covers common formats such as RIS, BibTeX, and EndNote, and BibDesk can generate PDFs or copy rich text for pasting into documents. Native services integrate with LaTeX editors to supply citation autocompletion, making the tool especially useful for academic writing workflows.
