Cog is a free, open‑source audio player that runs on macOS 10.15 and later. It supports playback of a very wide range of audio formats, including common codecs such as MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus, WAV, as many, and,‑ and formats like MIDI, Game Boy and Nintendo soundtracks, and various archive containers. The player can stream from HTTP(S) sources, handle HLS streams via FFmpeg, and read live metadata from services such as Shoutcast and Icecast.

The application provides features aimed at continuous listening and user convenience: gapless playback, automatic updates, global hotkeys, desktop notifications, and scrobbling to Last.fm. Users can shuffle or repeat tracks, albums, or playlists, and control playback speed and pitch with Rubber Band or SignalSmith Stretch libraries. Visual enhancements include a graphic equalizer, spectrum display, and support for album artwork in multiple image formats.

Advanced audio capabilities include HRTF binaural rendering, head‑tracking with AirPods and compatible headphones on macOS Monterey+, and support for CUE sheets and embedded metadata. The player also integrates external synthesizers such as SpessaSynth for MIDI, Nuked OPL3 for FM synthesis, and Apple’s DLSMusicDevice, offering a comprehensive solution for both casual listening and more specialized audio playback needs.
