CompressO

Open-source tool for compressing videos and images to smaller sizes.

CompressO is a free, open‑source desktop application that reduces the file size of videos and images. It bundles widely used command‑line utilities such as FFmpeg, pngquant, jpegoptim and gifski, invoking them through a graphical interface that runs entirely offline. Users can trim, split, batch‑process, and embed subtitles while adjusting audio and video settings, all without any network communication except optional update checks.

The software targets anyone who needs to shrink media files for storage, sharing, or embedding, including casual users, content creators and developers. Available installers are provided for Linux (Debian‑based and universal AppImage), Windows 64‑bit, and macOS (Intel and Apple‑Silicon). macOS users can also install via Homebrew, with a post‑install step that removes Apple’s quarantine flag to avoid gatekeeper warnings.

Built with the Tauri framework, CompressO combines a Rust backend with a React/Vite frontend, delivering a native‑look experience while keeping the binary size small. The project is maintained as a stable, community‑driven repository, and contributors can build the application locally using standard Rust and Node.js toolchains.
