Extraterm

Swiss army chainsaw of terminal emulators

Visit

Extraterm is a terminal emulator that combines a command‑line interface with a set of auxiliary tools. It runs on Linux and macOS and can be used on Windows through WSL, CMD, or PowerShell. The application includes a built‑in SSH client, image display, 24‑bit color, and color emoji support across platforms, as well as features such as a mini‑map, font ligatures, and configurable key bindings.

The program offers a “Command Palette” for keyboard‑driven actions, Unicode and emoji insertion, text zoom, global shortcuts, and the ability to tile multiple windows. Shell integration allows command output to be isolated, framed, and reused as input, supporting bash, zsh, and fish, and it simplifies file uploads and downloads directly from the terminal.

Extraterm also supports iTerm2 themes, provides output colorizing, and is released under the MIT license. Development is open‑source on GitHub, with a primary maintainer and a public issue tracker for bugs and feature requests.
