FreeSurfer
Software suite for processing and analyzing brain MRI images
FreeSurfer is an open‑source suite that handles the full processing pipeline for brain magnetic resonance imaging data. It performs skull‑stripping, bias field correction, image registration, and anatomical segmentation, and it can reconstruct cortical surfaces, register them across subjects, and apply parcellation schemes. The package also provides toolboxes for functional MRI and diffusion tractography, along with a visualization interface for exploring results.
The software is intended for researchers conducting cross‑sectional or longitudinal neuroimaging studies who need a comprehensive set of tools for structural, functional, and diffusion data analysis. It includes utilities for statistical group analysis, facilitating comparisons across participant groups or time points.
Developed by the Laboratory for Computational Neuroimaging at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, FreeSurfer is distributed under an open‑source license and runs on macOS. Its stable release status indicates a mature codebase that has been widely adopted in the neuroimaging community.
