Frigate

Frigate is an NVR that processes video streams from IP cameras on‑premises using real‑time AI object detection. It employs OpenCV and TensorFlow, optionally accelerated by a GPU or dedicated AI hardware, to identify people, vehicles and other objects directly on the host machine, keeping all footage local and private. The system runs lightweight motion detection to trigger inference only where needed, and it records video with retention policies tied to detected objects.

The software is designed for integration with home‑automation platforms such as Home Assistant, exposing MQTT topics, media browser entries and low‑latency camera entities for automations and alerts. Users can define zones and masks to fine‑tune which areas generate events, reducing false positives from shadows, wind or other irrelevant motion.

Frigate is self‑hostable, open‑source under the MIT license, and operates without subscription fees. It supports RTSP re‑streaming, WebRTC/MSE live view, and multiprocessing to maximize frame rates, making it suitable for privacy‑focused users who want a customizable, locally processed security camera solution.
