Gotenberg
Developer-friendly API to interact with powerful tools like Chromium and LibreOffice for converting numerous document formats (HTML, Markdown, Word, Excel, etc.) into PDF files, and more.
The service provides a Docker‑hosted HTTP API that converts a wide range of document types into PDF. It leverages headless Chromium for HTML, URL, and Markdown rendering, and LibreOffice for Office formats such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, supporting over a hundred input extensions. Users send files or URLs via multipart/form‑data and receive the generated PDF directly, without managing the underlying browsers or office suite.
In addition to conversion, the API offers post‑processing capabilities including merging, splitting, rotating, flattening, watermarking, stamping, encryption, and metadata manipulation through integrated tools like QPDF and pdfcpu. It also supports PDF/A and PDF/UA compliance, screenshot generation, and reading or writing bookmarks.
The platform is designed for cloud‑native workflows: it can fetch source files from S3‑compatible storage, stream results back to the same storage, and emit webhook events on completion. The solution is self‑hostable, open‑source under the MIT license, and positioned for production use without subscription or tier restrictions.
