NymphCast

Turn your choice of Linux-capable hardware into an audio and video source for a television or powered speakers (alternative to Chromecast).

NymphCast turns any Linux‑capable device, such as a Raspberry Pi, into a network‑accessible audio and video receiver for a television or powered speakers. A server component runs on the target hardware, while client devices—desktop, Android, or other platforms—act as remote controls to stream media files, URLs, or internet sources to the receiver. The system supports subtitles, a wide range of codecs via ffmpeg, and can be extended with AngelScript apps that add custom streaming protocols or user interfaces.

Typical use cases include audio‑only playback, full video streaming, screen‑saver mode, and an experimental stand‑alone GUI that mimics a smart‑TV interface. Multi‑room synchronization is available in an experimental form, and a separate MediaServer component can provide additional content sources. Communication relies on UDP port 4004 for discovery and TCP port 4004 for playback, with optional ports for the MediaServer.

The project is released under the BSD‑3‑Clause license, is self‑hostable, free of subscription, and fully open source. It provides a client SDK for integration into other applications and includes a desktop/Android player for easy discovery and control of NymphCast devices on a local network.
