OpenSesame
Graphical experiment builder for the social sciences
OpenSesame provides a graphical interface for building experiments used in psychology, neuroscience, and experimental economics. Users design study flow by arranging stimuli, response collection, and data logging components without writing code, though the tool also supports Python and JavaScript for custom functionality. The environment includes built‑in support for visual, auditory, and video stimuli, as well as devices such as keyboards, mice, joysticks, eye‑trackers, EEG systems, and virtual‑reality headsets.
The software offers a range of ready‑made experiment templates—implicit association tasks, card‑sorting tests, and visual‑world paradigms—alongside utilities for counterbalancing, timing control, and parallel execution of independent variables. Data can be recorded locally or sent to online platforms, and the system integrates with recruitment services and remote execution frameworks like JATOS.
OpenSesame runs on macOS in a stable release, and its architecture allows extensions through plugins and custom scripts. Documentation covers beginner to advanced topics, and a community forum provides support for troubleshooting and sharing extensions.
