OpenSMTPD
Secure SMTP server implementation from the OpenBSD project.
OpenSMTPD implements the server‑side SMTP protocol defined by RFC 5321 and a set of common extensions, enabling ordinary Unix and Unix‑like systems to send and receive email with any other SMTP‑compatible host. It is written as part of the OpenBSD project, distributed under the permissive ISC license, and is considered stable and self‑hostable without subscription or tiered pricing.
The software runs on a wide range of platforms, including Linux, the BSD family, and macOS, and can be installed from standard package managers, container images, or by compiling from source with common dependencies such as libevent and OpenSSL/LibreSSL. Documentation is provided via online manual pages and a wiki that guides users through configuration and deployment of a full mail server.
OpenSMTPD is maintained primarily by Gilles Chehade and Eric Faurot, with contributions from the OpenBSD community and other developers. Its focus on a clean, standards‑compliant implementation makes it suitable for administrators seeking a free, open‑source SMTP server that integrates smoothly with existing Unix environments.
