QST

QST is a self‑hosted assessment engine that runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and can support thousands of simultaneous users through a mod_perl and MySQL stack. It offers a full lifecycle for quizzes and exams, including automatic grading of objective items, manual grading for essays, a built‑in gradebook, and detailed statistical analysis that can be exported as CSV or JSON. The platform is multi‑tenant, allowing unlimited organizations, classes and users on a single server without requiring complex infrastructure.

The system supports a wide range of question types—multiple‑choice, matching, true/false, short answer, essay, surveys, and branch logic—and provides a WYSIWYG editor for creating unlimited math and chemistry equations using LaTeX, MathJax or MathML. Features such as the “Memory” mode, which displays information only once, and rich media embedding make it suitable for both quick phone quizzes and high‑stakes, proctored desktop testing.

QST is released under GPL‑2.0, making it free, open source and vendor‑neutral. It can be installed and running within about half an hour, with a single file update path, and it avoids any subscription fees or licensing restrictions while offering scalability, security and privacy for educational institutions and other assessment providers.
