RELATE is a web‑based courseware system built on the Django framework that lets instructors create and deliver interactive learning material. Content is authored in plain text using standard YAML and Markdown, which makes it reusable and easy to version through deep integration with git; instructors can preview new revisions while students continue to use earlier versions on the same server.

The platform supports multiple courses on a single installation and offers a range of page types, including static text, quizzes, surveys, and code‑execution questions with sandboxed grading, plotting, and optional human review. Built‑in features such as a class calendar, grade book, analytics of student responses, live classroom quizzes, and XMPP‑based instant messaging facilitate both online and in‑person teaching.
