Rygel

UPnP AV MediaServer that allows you to easily share audio, video, and pictures. Media player software may use Rygel to become a MediaRenderer that may be controlled remotely by a UPnP or DLNA Controller.

Rygel implements a UPnP AV MediaServer that lets a host share audio, video, and picture files with other devices on the network. It conforms to DLNA specifications and can transcode media on‑the‑fly so that clients such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, or phones can play content that would otherwise be unsupported. In addition to serving media, Rygel can operate as a MediaRenderer, allowing a UPnP or DLNA controller to direct playback and redirect sound to compatible speakers.

The system is built around a plug‑in architecture, exposing shared libraries (librygel‑core, librygel‑db, librygel‑server, librygel‑renderer, etc.) that developers can use to create custom plugins, media engines, or alternative UPnP/DLNA servers. Documentation covers user features, plugin development, and integration with GStreamer for rendering.

Rygel is released under LGPL‑2.1, is self‑hostable, and available as a stable, open‑source package in most major Linux distributions, with source builds supported through provided development guides.
