UTM
UTM is an easy-to-use GUI for QEMU and can run ARM64, x64 and other VMs on M1 Macs.
UTM provides a graphical interface to QEMU that lets macOS users create and manage virtual machines with minimal configuration. It leverages Apple’s Hypervisor framework on Apple Silicon to run ARM64 guests at near‑native speed, while on Intel Macs it virtualizes x86/x64 systems directly. For architectures not supported natively, UTM falls back to QEMU emulation, offering a range of processors such as ARM32, MIPS, PowerPC and RISC‑V.
The tool targets developers, security researchers and enthusiasts who need to run multiple operating systems—including Windows, Linux, older PowerPC or SPARC platforms, and even additional macOS instances—on a single Mac. It abstracts QEMU’s extensive command‑line options into a macOS‑styled UI, preserving privacy and security expectations of the platform.
UTM is fully open source and distributed under a permissive license; the App Store version matches the free release except for automatic update delivery. Contributions are welcomed via its public GitHub repository.
