VisIt
Visualisation and data analysis for mesh-based scientific data
VisIt is an open‑source application for interactively visualizing and analyzing scientific data that is organized on structured, adaptive, or unstructured meshes. It runs on Unix, Windows, and macOS workstations and can handle data sets ranging from small desktop‑scale projects to large simulations that use hundreds of thousands of processor cores. Users can create static images, animate data through time, and apply a variety of operators and mathematical expressions to transform the data before exporting results for presentations.
The tool supports scalar and vector fields in two‑ and three‑dimensional space and includes a plugin system that enables reading more than 120 scientific data formats. Its modular design allows developers to add custom readers, operators, and plot types, extending the core functionality without altering the main code base.
VisIt originated in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Simulation and Computing Initiative to support terascale simulation analysis, and it continues to be maintained as a stable, community‑driven project with documentation and releases hosted on GitHub.
