WhatRoute
Network diagnostic utility
WhatRoute is a macOS‑only network diagnostic tool that offers classic utilities such as traceroute, ping, DNS lookup and WHOIS queries, while also monitoring inbound and outbound traffic. It augments these functions with a geo‑location service that maps the route of packets onto a world map, giving users a visual sense of where intermediate routers are situated.
The application targets Mac users who need to troubleshoot connectivity issues or explore the path of network traffic without resorting to command‑line tools. Its interface presents the results of each diagnostic operation in a readable format, and the geographic overlay helps illustrate the physical journey of data across the Internet.
WhatRoute has been maintained since 1996, evolving from classic Mac OS to the current macOS as a Universal Binary supporting Intel processors. It relies on the MaxMind GeoLite City database for location data, providing a free, albeit approximate, mapping of IP addresses to geographic locations.
