Angband

Angband is a free, single‑player dungeon exploration game in which the player assumes the role of an adventurer venturing from a small trading town into the depths of a randomly generated cavern complex. The goal is to acquire treasure, defeat a variety of monsters represented by ASCII symbols, and ultimately confront Morgoth, the Lord of Darkness. The game uses turn‑based combat and permadeath, requiring a new start after each defeat.

The interface offers both traditional ASCII graphics and optional graphical tiles for players who prefer visual representations. In‑game help is accessible via the “?” key, and a comprehensive user manual is provided online. The software is available for macOS and Windows, and the source code is openly distributed.

An active community supports Angband through forums, a live web server for browser‑based play, and a ladder system for ranking character sheets. These resources enable players to share strategies, discuss variants, and observe other adventurers’ progress.
