Genea.app

Genealogy tool designed with privacy in mind that anyone can use to author or edit their family tree. Data is stored in the GEDCOM format and all processing is done in the browser.

The tool lets users visually construct and modify a family tree directly in the browser, using the GEDCOM format for both import and export. It renders the genealogy with a WebAssembly‑compiled Graphviz library, supporting a default layout that includes grandparents, parents, partners, siblings and children. An abstraction layer assigns the appropriate data to each node, and the interface is built with Vue.js and Materialize.

All processing occurs client‑side, so no server components are required and users retain full control over where the GEDCOM files are stored. The application can be run from a self‑hosted HTTPS site, accessed through the public web interface, or used on mobile devices. Optional Git integration allows loading and saving trees from private or public repositories, while direct file exchange remains possible.

The project is open source under the MIT license, self‑hostable, and offered without subscription or tiered pricing. It targets anyone who wants a privacy‑focused genealogy editor that can interoperate with other services through standard GEDCOM files.
