Piler provides a self‑hosted, open‑source platform for archiving email messages and attachments. It includes an integrated SMTP server and supports a range of archival and retention rules, legal hold, deduplication, compression, encryption, and digital fingerprint verification. Users can perform full‑text searches with simple or expert filters, save search criteria, tag messages, and export or restore individual or bulk items. The system logs audit activity, tracks online status, and offers accounting features.
Access control is handled through AD/LDAP, IMAP, POP3, single sign‑on, Google Apps, and Office 365 integrations, with optional STARTTLS and two‑factor authentication via Google Authenticator. Internationalisation and a customizable theme allow adaptation to different environments.
The solution is designed for organizations that need compliant, tamper‑evident email storage while reducing storage costs. It scales to millions of messages, supports common formats such as EML, Maildir, and mailbox, and can be packaged for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS using Docker‑based builds.
