Polyphone

Soundfont editor for quickly designing musical instruments

Visit

Polyphone is a free, open‑source editor for creating and modifying musical instruments in the SoundFont family of formats (sf2, sf3, sfz, sfArk, grandOrgue). It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux via the Qt framework and supports multiple languages. Users import audio samples—recorded, generated, or downloaded—then apply signal‑processing tools such as pitch detection, resampling, filtering, and loop evaluation to prepare them for instrument design.

The software distributes the prepared samples across the instrument’s pitch range, allowing detailed configuration of attenuation, transposition, pan, filters, envelopes, and modulations. Built‑in tools can operate on many instruments at once, enabling automatic key‑based division, progressive high‑pitch attenuation, random detuning, spatialization patterns, and chord‑building from combined sounds.

Polyphone also includes a built‑in player for auditioning instruments, a customizable interface, extensive documentation, and an online repository for sharing and discovering soundfonts. It is aimed at musicians, sound designers, and developers who need a functional, cross‑platform solution for managing large instrument collections.
