Dexed
DX7 FM synthesiser
Dexed provides a software implementation of the Yamaha DX7 FM synthesiser, available as a VST, AU, and LV2 plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It reproduces the DX7’s 144 automatable parameters in a single interface and supports full DX7 and TX7 Sysex exchange, allowing it to function as a patch editor and manager for hardware units. Users can load, edit, and save individual programs or entire cartridge files, with real‑time VU meters indicating active operators.
The plugin includes three selectable engine types that emulate different aspects of the original hardware’s digital signal processing, from a modern 24‑bit implementation to versions that mimic the DX7’s limited bit resolution and OPL‑series characteristics. This flexibility lets musicians and sound designers compare tonal variations across the emulated architectures.
Dexed is released under GPL v3 and relies on contributions from the open‑source community, including a DX engine, graphical design, and additional features such as microtuning and MPE support. The project’s documentation is hosted on a wiki, and a cartridge manager facilitates browsing and dragging DX7 program files directly into the plugin.
