Rio
Hardware-accelerated GPU terminal emulator
Rio is a terminal emulator that leverages GPU acceleration to render its interface, offering a modern visual experience across multiple platforms. It runs as a desktop application on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and a web‑assembly version is under development for browsers. The emulator supports features such as split panes, CRT‑style effects, and blurred backgrounds, demonstrated on systems ranging from standard laptops to devices like the Steam Deck.
The project targets developers and power users who need a responsive, visually rich terminal that can handle intensive rendering tasks without relying solely on CPU resources. By offloading drawing operations to the GPU, Rio aims to provide smoother scrolling, faster updates, and richer visual effects compared to traditional terminal emulators.
Rio is written in Rust with a minimum supported version of 1.92.0, and its source is openly available for contribution and sponsorship. Documentation, installation guides, and configuration details are hosted at rioterm.com, and package status is tracked through the Repology service.
