SaneSideButtons
Menu bar app that enables system-wide navigation using side mouse buttons
SaneSideButtons is a macOS menu‑bar utility that maps the extra side buttons on a mouse to forward and backward navigation commands. By simulating three‑finger swipe gestures, it enables system‑wide history navigation in any window that supports such actions, allowing the user to move through pages or documents without relying on keyboard shortcuts or on‑screen controls.
The tool runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and can be installed either by downloading the binary or via Homebrew cask. It is positioned as a lightweight, stable utility for users who prefer mouse‑based navigation across applications.
Developed by Jan, the project is open source and hosted on GitHub, where additional documentation and updates are provided.
