Nightfall
Menu bar utility for toggling dark mode
Nightfall adds a menu‑bar icon to macOS that lets users switch the system appearance between light and dark modes with a single click. A left‑click toggles the mode instantly, while a right‑click opens a small options menu for additional controls. The utility works on macOS Catalina and later and can be installed either by downloading a release package or via Homebrew Cask.
Users can assign a global keyboard shortcut—defaulting to ⌃⌥⌘T—to toggle dark mode from any application, and an optional animated transition smooths the visual change when enabled. The animation requires screen‑recording permission because it captures the display to render the effect.
Nightfall can be temporarily hidden from the menu bar by dragging its icon while holding the Command key, allowing the app to keep running without occupying space. It also offers an optional automatic check for new releases, prompting the user when an update is available, though the download must be performed manually.
